“I became aware that whatever I paid attention to grew. If I focused on the bad news and the awful, it seemed that the whole world was pointing its finger at me. If I focused on the amazing company we had created, I began to trust that I could do it again. I just had to brush myself off and get back on that entrepreneurial horse.” – from Cold Hard Truth
I’ve heard the same insight expressed in many ways from different people. James Arthur Ray from The Secret expressed it as (more…)

As the saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention”. Also true is the cliché: “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.” So if you’re going through a rough patch, regroup and rethink your entire business. I strongly advise you to take all of your marketing efforts online because they can be so effective and yet cost so little relative to traditional ways of advertising. Now that we’re getting into the winter months there’s no better time to expand your knowledge of e-commerce based real estate by taking one of my continuing education courses, either online or in-person.
“I now know that I’d rather invest in entrepreneurs who have (more…)

It’s particularly valuable if you can find a business partner who is good at and has a passion for writing. Being successful today with an ecommerce based real estate business requires having a website with high search engine ranking for your farm area. You get that by having new written content on your farm area getting regularly added to your website. Your site’s search engine ranking will go nowhere without doing this. It shouldn’t be hard to find a good writer at your office. There are likely many university graduates with arts degrees at your office. During their university days what these people mostly did was spend literally thousands of hours researching in the library and writing long essays. Consequently, such a person is ideal for helping write for your website and writing your listing presentation materials.
Another valuable skill to look for in a partner is (more…)

Best of all, in working with these investors regularly it’s almost inevitable you’ll start learning their investing strategies. You also have the great benefit of learn from your investor clients’ errors without losing money yourself. Most people learn by example and many a real estate sales person has gone on to become a full time real estate investor. These real estate sales people get an edge on investors by having and keeping their real estate license because they can often find out about new property listings on MLS several days before the public can know about them. This allows them to capitalize on many more great buying opportunities than the general public gets.
“There are tons of books on how to have a happy marriage. But keeping your business partnership healthy is an equally important goal, because (more…)

You are much better off bringing your farm area and your real estate expertise to the forefront of your branding rather than you personally. It’ll make your business sell much easier and for more money when you retire or decide to do something else for a living. After all, the law of diminishing returns applies as much to people as it does to economics and business. Venture capitalists know that, and that’s why they have an exit strategy from the beginning for any venture capital investment they make. (more…)

However, if you answered mostly Always True or Quite True to most of these questions then I don’t believe entrepreneurship is right for you. If you are already in real estate sales then you’ve probably haven’t made much money doing it. Understand that I’m not trying to discourage you from succeeding. I’m just asking you to be brutally honest with yourself and ask yourself if real estate sales is truly your calling. You are likely to find better ways for you to be successful that will make you happier too. Then again, re-grouping yourself, taking some time to learn about the business, and pressing on may be all you need to take your business to the next level. (more…)

“You must discover which role suits you best: employee or employer. Being a successful employee requires continually honing a talent for diplomacy and collaboration. You’re rewarded with security and a steady salary with fewer of the headaches from which entrepreneurs suffer. Running a successful business, on the other hand, is an all-consuming, all-encompassing venture, which totally invigorates some, totally exhausts others.” – from Cold Hard Truth
We all dream of becoming wealthy, but there are many ways of getting there, and one needn’t necessarily (more…)

There’s an old adage: “those that can, do. Those that can’t, teach”. While not universally true, I believe it’s true in most cases. There are many a failed or mediocre business person who couldn’t hack it in sales or owning their own business and had to settle for becoming business teachers of some sort at a school. You can also find these people still in the business world. For instance, if someone can’t cut it as an independent third party recruiter (eg. executive search or headhunter) they often take up a much more secure yet far less paying job in Human Resources.
You would be very hard pressed to find (more…)
