Using ‘Piggybacking’ For Boosting Your Site’s Search Engine Ranking Part 1

August 23, 2010

If you’re one of the many real estate professionals who can never find the time for writing content for your real estate website, don’t want to do it, or can’t write well enough, here’s something else you can do for giving your website a major boost in big search engines like Google.  It requires much less time and effort than writing articles.  I call it piggybacking.

For understanding what piggybacking is you first need to understand the concept of backlinks.  Backlinks are your website links when they appear on other websites.  For instance, if a mortgage broker you know who refers clients to you put your website link somewhere on their website this would be one backlink for you.

Not all backlinks are created equal.  The more popular a site is where your backlink appears, the more valuable that backlink is.  For instance, having your site’s backlink on cnn.com will help your website’s search engine ranking far more than having your backlink on your mortgage broker friend’s site.

So with site popularity in mind this article series will explore the world’s most popular sites whose real estate related pages should definitely have your backlinks on them.  That’s what I mean by piggybacking – taking advantage of a site’s high popularity by getting your backlinks on it whenever appropriate with the goal of improving your website’s search engine optimization (SEO).

By appropriate backlink posting I mean only posting your backlinks on pages with largely real estate related content.  It’s no good posting your backlinks on highly popular sites with pages having nothing to do whatsoever with real estate.  If search engines consistently find your backlinks on pages with content unrelated to real estate this often confuses them about how they should categorize your site.  It may cause engines like Google to re-classify your site under some topic other than real estate.  This is almost as bad as having no search engine ranking at all.

Here are the different types of hugely popular sites you should have your backlinks on whenever possible:

News Sites

These types of sites are among the most popular in the world and for many people have replaced daily print newspapers or radio.  In fact, many people who never watched news programs on TV or read newspapers are daily reading online news portals.  It’s no accident that many of the world’s wealthiest people are involved in media.
