Should You Create Your Own Website Content? Part 2

August 17, 2010

Write something and have a few friends and family read it.  Let them judge whether your writing skills are sufficient.  If they aren’t, hire someone who has these skills.

If English is not your first language and you immigrated from a foreign country in the past 5-10 years then you should definitely have someone who speaks English as their first language take a look at your writing.  In most cases you will need to hire a writer.

Another key factor is your ability to type.  Writers know how to touch type and can type in excess of 50 words per minute.  People who “two finger type” often can only type at a fraction of that speed.

Do you have the time?

Writing original content of a high quality can be very time consuming. Something that takes a skilled writer a half hour to create may take an unskilled writer several hours to do and it still won’t be as good as the skilled writer’s work.  And because a good website is never finished it’s an ongoing thing, day after day, week after week. Can you do it?

If writing your own content isn’t for you, there are many people around who will be happy to write for your website. They do it because it positions them as experts and gives them exposure and access to your readers. All these writers usually want in return is a by-line – a short 3 to 5 line description of the author and his/her business at the end of the article. So if you don’t want to (or cannot) create your own content, ask others to help.

Inviting Contributions

Have an announcement on your site or on popular classified sites that you’re accepting real estate related articles. Then wade through the submissions and choose the best ones for your audience.  If you find yourself overwhelmed with choices and find it difficult picking the best writers, try the site eLance.  There are thousands of skilled writers on this site and can you really narrow down the best candidates by using their advanced search feature.  These writers will often write for very reasonable rates.  They charge either by the hour or by the number of words written.  If you’ve got a modicum of writing skill you can get them to edit your articles for a lesser rate than writing content from scratch.
