Should You Create Your Own Website Content? Part 1
August 16, 2010
With all the many tasks involved in your real estate business, not all of them should be done by you personally. Some tasks you’ll always need to do yourself, but many others can and should be outsourced to others. Some tasks in your business are worth far more per hour than others, so you want to do the most revenue generation activities yourself and leave the less revenue generating activities to others. For instance, spending time on the phone following up with past clients and prospects is a high level, revenue generating task. Doing paperwork for closings is not a revenue generating task, though it’s obviously an essential part of your business and must still be done.
If you’re building your business online with your real estate website, you really need to take an inventory of yourself and think about whether you should create your real estate content, have someone do it for you, or a combination of both.
If you have a lot of experience in your specialty, and your writing skills are excellent, content creation will be a simple matter of sitting down at your computer and letting the ideas flow onto the screen. But if you aren’t such a person then generating material for your site may feel like having a tooth pulled without anesthetic!
But don’t despair. There’s something for everyone on the Net. Before you decide to create your own content, here are some things to consider:
Do you have the expertise?
Are you really an expert? Can you write valuable, reliable, interesting content regularly that can’t be readily found elsewhere? Some of your readers will quickly know if you’re an expert or not because they live in your farm area. Don’t try acting like an expert if you’re not as these people are your listing prospects. The people interested in moving to your farm area are buyers. They won’t know nearly as much about your farm area, so your site will be particularly valuable to them.
Do you have writing skill?
Can you write well? If you have no formal training it’s unlikely you’ll understand all the ways of making your writing concise yet easily understandable. But for some people practice has made perfect. They’ve done a lot of writing on the internet and in college or university over the years and have developed a knack for it.
