Choosing A Money Making Domain Name For Your Real Estate Website Part 3

July 26, 2010

So if you had a domain name such as “downtown<yourcityname>condos.com” you would get people contacting you who were interested in this specific type of property in this specific area.  You’d get a fewer number of prospects than the rep with the generic domain name, but you’d get more qualified prospects overall.  Having this branding allows you to spend more time helping each prospect, increasing the chances they’ll work with you.  It’s easier closing prospects who know what they want, especially when they found and contacted you because your branding indicated you specialize in what they want!

So it’s important to have your website name and URL reflect your branding.  Really think about what words you want to be known for.  If you do a lot of business in luxury condos in your city then create a domain name that has the words “luxury”, “condos” and your city name in it.  Doing this also makes your domain name more memorable than if your domain is merely your name or a generic, overly broad domain.

The more focused your branding is, the more likely you’ll get qualified prospects and more closings.

Long or Short Domain Names?

Domain names can be up to 253 characters long, but your domain shouldn’t be anywhere close to that long.  So there’s no need to make an acronym of your website name for your domain (eg. reinm.com for realestateinmississauga.com) unless the acronym is universally known amongst local people (eg. nychomes.com for New York City homes).  Keep in mind certain web browsers programs, email programs and other web related applications may not support domain names over 26 characters.

So how long should your domain name be?  It depends on what domain names are available.  You can search for available names at popular domain registrars like Godaddy.com.  If you can get a short domain name that concisely states your branding (eg. <yourcityname>homes.com) then use that.  Unfortunately, you’ll almost always find that the simplest domain names describing real estate in your area are already taken and the domain owners probably aren’t selling them.  However, if your business focus is on a single neighborhood you’ll seldom find many of the related domains taken (eg. <yourneighborhoodname>homes.com).

What characters can be used in a domain name?  Any letter, number or hyphens (the “–“ symbol).  All other symbols are illegal and won’t be allowed.
