Choosing A Money Making Domain Name For Your Real Estate Website Part 2

July 23, 2010

It’s particularly good buying a domain that has already achieved some ranking within major search engines, especially Google.  Some companies actually create fake real estate websites with written content on a specific city or neighborhood to achieve ready-made search engine ranking and then sell the domain to anyone interested.  This can save you a lot of time and money in getting your website search engine optimized (SEO).  So paying a few extra dollars for your coveted domain name can be a very wise investment.

If you can’t negotiate a satisfactory deal for the domains you most want, see if other domain names describing your business are available.  With a little time and creativity you can usually find a very suitable domain name for your business no one else has thought of.

Generic Vs. Branded Domain Names

Many people think your domain name must a generic name like realestate.com. The more generic the name is, the more likely it’s been taken, and the more you’ll usually pay for such domains.  Most importantly, you’ll have the most competition in getting high search engine ranking if you get a generic domain name like <yourcityname>realestate.com.  It can take many months (even years) to get page one ranking in Google for generic domain names.

Moreover, people with generic domain names often get lots of leads but many of those leads are unqualified.

Here’s why they’re unqualified.  When people begin searching for a home they usually don’t know exactly what they want initially.  For instance, they will often start by searching with general terms such as “<your city’s name> real estate” or “<your city’s name> homes”.  They may contact a real estate professional ranked highly in Google for these searches.  This rep is likely continually hearing from these seemingly wishy washy people who don’t know what they want yet.  If you were getting lots of these types of people contacting you each day you probably wouldn’t spend a lot of time helping them find what they want.  So many of these undecided people will move on in their search and not work with these frustrated and therefore not very helpful reps.

But as the search progresses for these undecided people they will get a clearer sense of exactly what they want.  For example, they may decide they want a condo in the downtown part of your city.
