Are You A “No” Sayer At Heart?, Part 8
December 1, 2009
The next time you find yourself thinking about how to say no in some way, when you are trying to think of reasons for not doing something (anything at all), immediately stop yourself and pull the elastic out and let it snap against your wrist. The harder you pull it, the better. How far you pull it out is up to you, but consider this. The psychologist Abraham Maslow made the famous observation that people (when given the choice of receiving pleasure or avoiding pain), almost everyone will choose to avoid pain. With that in mind, it stands to reason that the more pain, the more people will want to escape from it. When you snap the elastic against your wrist, you are feeling pain to some degree.
If you snap the elastic every time you catch yourself thinking in ways that ultimately amount to “no”, you will start creating a mental association between pain, saying “No” and thinking negatively. That is the key thing. When you associate physical pain with negative thinking, it will help you stop thinking negatively. If thinking negatively will induce progressively more and more pain, eventually you will want to do the exact opposite to avoid the pain: think positively. By the way, go check out the Jim Carrey movie “Yes Man”. It’s a great illustration of what I’m trying to say.
If you take this exercise seriously and don’t dismiss it as silly without even trying it, you’ll start to see changes in yourself and your business. You’ll find yourself starting to think more and more of life and your career in terms of possibilities, not in terms of negations or what might go wrong. Just remember there is always a time to think in terms of possibilities and a time to ACT! If you are always thinking strictly in terms of possibilities but never actually aggressively acting on them, that in itself is a subtle yet HUGE NO in your thought processes!
