Are You A “No” Sayer At Heart?, Part 2

November 23, 2009

When Paul left the stage, he sat near me.  Him and I soon partnered up together to do a learning exercise as part of this event.  Paul soon referred me to a woman he was sitting with (Maria), telling me she was a real estate professional.  She gave Paul about 6 of her fliers and he passed them to me.  The fliers were a very conventional calendar flier for 2010.  I guess she thought I was supposed to hand out the other 5 fliers to people I know.

During our dinner break that day, Paul, Maria and I went out for dinner, and when we were in the car it was the first chance I had to really talk with Maria.  She was inquiring about my business and we talked about real estate.  What I soon noticed was that Maria had a very pessimistic, negative mind set, at least on the matters we were talking about: using the internet for selling real estate and having an ecommerce based real estate business.  Almost every time I said something about this, I noticed her responses almost always started with some variation of “Yeah, but…”.  She questioned nearly everything I had to say about the matter, but I could tell she had not really explored any of these matters nor the internet in depth.

I thought her thoughts on these matters were cheap skepticism.  None of her opinions were well informed and I could tell she never actually taken much action in exploring whether or not the internet could help her with her business.  In fact, she told me she’s been a real estate professional for 25 years, yet she doesn’t even have her own website!  I find that incredible in this day and age.

Later, Maria confided in me that she had just met Paul that day at the event and he had asked her to come to his home for dinner sometime, and she had agreed.  She definitely had some buyer remorse now!  She was definitely not attracted to Paul, though she is single.  She said she wanted to get out of the date because he might come onto her sexually.  I thought to myself that she was denying herself a valuable opportunity for getting to know someone new, very interesting and successful simply because she wasn’t attracted to him!  Imagine if we all went through life like this!  It’s insanity.
