Passion + Planning = Momentum – Part 3
May 29, 2009
In Part 2 of this article I illustrated the concept of momentum by sharing the story of an associate of mine who achieved momentum and success with their business. The story continues:
“Undaunted, I took the feedback I received on the weak points of my business plan and went back to the drawing board. I did more research and re-submitted a stronger business plan. I got accepted to the second qualification phase for the program. We were given two days of instructed classes to work on our business plans and refine them further. But when I had the final interview to determine if I got into the program I was rejected again. But I was still determined to make the business a reality. So I applied to the program for a third time.
I soon discovered my attitude had changed dramatically toward the business. I found that my days were no longer spent half heartedly working on my business plan. The application process to this program had forced me to think about and write down exactly what I was going to do with my business and how I was going to make it succeed. My ideas and plans were no longer vague. They were clear and definite. Moreover, they gave me definite direction because I continually knew what I needed to do next. I hadn’t written down what I thought the application wanted me to say, I wrote down exactly what I wanted to do and how I intended to do it. I had made the plan specific, but more importantly I had made it personal. My passion for writing was evident throughout this application. My business plan was 19 pages long even at that early stage!
From then on, I found myself working long hours on the plan every day with enthusiasm. I decided not to reapply to the program because I felt I didn’t need it. Having been through university, I was very experienced in researching on my own
and knew where to get the information I needed for the various parts of my business plan. I had achieved momentum!”
So there are two critical things you need for gaining momentum as a real estate professional or in any walk of life: 1) A plan and 2) a plan that is infused with your personal interest and passion. If either of those elements are missing, you’re
success will be limited. You may come up with a plan, but it might never be put into action. At the very least, that plan will be much less successful than if you had those 2 critical elements.
When my associate started out with his magazine idea, he had passion, but no plan. When he created that plan with his passion for writing, he achieved momentum.
In my next article I’ll talk more about achieving momentum as a real estate professional. Learn even more about it by taking my course Excelling In The Real Estate Profession. This course has been approved by the Registrar, REBBA 2002 to qualify for 9 credits.
